Does Pivoting Your YouTube Channel Actually Hurt Its Reach?

  • I have been watching a video there from YouTube but I am unsure what I think when it comes to pivoting content. In my experience and thoughts we have a channel on X subject and people expect X content type from the channel. When switching to another niche/pivoting content I have noticed views completely tank in my own experience.

Most views dont come from the subscribers of the channel most are non subscribed BUT the initial testing pool seems to be a group of the subscribers and if that small pool arent interested I am fairly sure YouTube doesnt open the video up to a wider audience at that point so with content/niche pivoting surely the initial test pool are unlikely to watch the new niche/content and therefore the algorithm isnt as likely to push it further.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it worth pivoting in your experience or would you just create a new channel? Does the existing audience have THAT much of an effect on the performance of videos? Obviously I dont know how the algo works just what I have heard and saw etc
