Is Newcastles POV filming culture going too far?

    Theres been so much discussion lately about POV meta glasses content in particular in Newcastle Upon Tyne where there's channels like MIchael Ballymore and TinTin who go around the city centre approaching homeless and often marginilised people and recording them without consent. Theres been quite a lot of what seems to be bullying posted but also a few times theyre helping the homeless. I dont think all of it is really bad but its becoming an issue where people think they can record you in a public place without any kind of consent. YouTube creator TynsideLife has been discussing this lately.

    What do you think? Should people have the right to film anyone in a public place without their consent? Where should the line be drawn when the person being filmed is homeless or otherwise vulnerable? Should there be specific laws around filming people for social media content?

    I don't like it one bit. I saw a video recently on tiktok where a guy had a velcro suit on and attached cameras all over it, went into a grocery store and a woman understandably got really angry. She started saying he shouldn't be filming here and said if she ended up on the internet she'd sue him. This asshole of course still posted the video and labeled it "Karen gets mad about me filming" or something like that. I expected to see him getting ripped apart in the comments but no, everyone was mocking the lady. Mocking her for expecting to be able to GO TO THE GROCERY STORE IN PRIVATE.

    I mean we have laws about respecting people's privacy and somehow they're getting thrown out the window because of new technologies. People suffer from mental illness, anxieties, and many just want to be left alone. Anyone who doesn't care about that or respect that is just being straight up evil. (Didn't say they were INHERENTLY evil, they could just be reeeally selfish and incapable of big picture thinking)

    Thats similar to what I think, imagine someone hasnt left home in years with anxiety etc and finally decide to go shopping and they run into someone filming them, they probably wont go out again or even just knowing this is happening they may not even leave the house at all because of it and become really concerned it may happen to them.

    In the UK youre able to record in a public place etc we have laws to allow for that but mocking, bullying etc with POV cameras is just plain wrong. I am curious if the platforms will eventually do something about it. It is like the dating content creators recording pick up with women which I do see how thats helpful but if theyre not consenting to it being posted then surely that shouldnt be monetisable.

    Yeah, I'm pretty umm... strict in my views on this stuff I guess. Most people seem to not care and I'm not sure why, but if I were in charge I would actually make it illegal to sell hidden wearable cameras to the public, or at least illegal to be caught with them on you. I'd make it so that if you're filming in public it must be obvious and you can't do so inside establishments that don't explicitly allow it, then let it be up to the businesses themselves.
