Do YouTube Shorts Hurt Long Form Videos? Does Scheduling Affect the Algorithm?

  • Im scared to even post a short on my new channel at this point in case I mess up the views on my other videos, I am unsure about the relation between normal videos and shorts and whether the scheduling between the two affects the other. Does posting shorts have any affect on the performance of your regular videos like with watch time/audience retention etc does it help support your regular long form videos? Maybe I am overthinking this I am not sure.

  • YouTube addresses the main worry in its Shorts discovery guidance: a Short's performance does not lower recommendations for the channel's long videos. It also says creators do not need a minimum upload frequency for good performance:

I'd separate that from whether a particular Short attracts people who want the longer video. For a story or gameplay series, I'd make the Short promise the same experience as the episode, give it one satisfying moment, then connect it to the relevant full video. YouTube's Related Video option provides a clickable route in the Shorts player; it requires advanced feature access:

For scheduling, YouTube's performance FAQ says upload time is not known to determine long-term performance, although it can affect the initial audience and matters for Live/Premieres:

A practical check would be to keep the long-video schedule steady for a small batch, use closely related Shorts, and compare the longer videos at the same publication age. Look at traffic sources and viewing duration as well as views. A bigger Shorts total by itself does not tell you whether people reached or stayed with the full video.
