How do I make close-up nail videos look smoother without losing detail?

  • When I do a manicure and I think it looks really nice in real life, then I take a super close-up photo or video and suddenly I see everything… like cuticles looking rough, small dust particles, dry skin but in real life it doesn’t look like that at all, everything looks smooth and clean.

Is there any camera setting or phone trick to make it look a bit smoother? Like I want the nails to stay sharp and detailed, but cuticles not to look so harsh as zoomed in.

Now every little thing shows on camera and it makes the work look worse than it actually is

  • Have you tried the portrait mode on your phone? It may help smooth things out some more. Diffused lighting will help too. I know when close up every detail becomes visible as I do quite a bit of macro photography it can be difficult to avoid. Softer lighting will definitely help and you may want to do some editing after in Lightroom if you have access to it.
